STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Basic Duties:
The Secondary School University & Career Counselor supports students in Grades 9–12 with academic planning, career exploration, and university admissions. The role includes advising on IB Diploma Program course selection and graduation requirements; coordinating all aspects of the application process such as transcripts, recommendations, testing, and scholarships; building relationships with universities; organizing career and alumni events; maintaining student records and admissions data; and engaging in ongoing professional development to ensure services reflect best practices.
Duties & Responsibilities
College, University & Career Counseling
● Organize, promote, and facilitate university visits to the RAS campus.
● Lead college counseling classes using BridgeU for students in Grades 9–12.
● Maintain student records in online application platforms (eg. BridgeU, UCAS, Common App, and others as applicable).
● Organize and lead workshops for students and parents on the college preparation process throughout the academic year.
● Conduct individual meetings with students and parents to initiate the university application process.
● Support students in identifying and applying to best-fit universities and manage the submission of all required documents, including transcripts, recommendation letters, school reports, and the school profile.
● Track student acceptances and enrollment trends in higher education institutions.
● Assist students in applying for scholarships to Post-Secondary Educational institutions.
● Develop and maintain strong relationships with university admissions officers
worldwide.
● Plan, promote, and coordinate the Annual RAS Career Day in the spring.
● Facilitate guest lectures and workshops with field experts and career professionals.
● Serve as the PSAT Testing Coordinator for Grades 10 and 11.
● Write letters of recommendation/reference for Grade 12 students.
● Train and support faculty recommendation writers in the letter-writing process.
● Maintain RAS’s recognition as an NCAA approved school for any students interested in pursuing athletics in the United States.
Academic Individual Student Planning
● Implement a four-year counseling curriculum focused on career exploration.
● Provide students and parents with comprehensive, up-to-date guidance on university admissions, with a focus on the U.S., Canada, the UK, the EU and Morocco.
● Offer group and individual counseling sessions to support students through
the university search and application process.
● Maintain expertise in the IB Diploma Program, advising Grade 10 students on IBDP course selection and guiding students through course changes in collaboration with the academic team.
● Ensure students receive fair and well-crafted teacher reference letters, managing the recommendation process, and writing counselor letters when appropriate.
● Facilitate career exploration activities, helping students identify career paths suited to their strengths and aspirations.
Professionalism & Development
● Demonstrate cultural competence when working with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
● Engage in ongoing professional development, research, and learning to stay updated on best practices in university counseling.
● Participate in regional, national, and international professional organizations as relevant.
● Maintain strict student confidentiality in compliance with RAS policies.
Testing & Standardized Exams
● Plan, coordinate, and oversee standardized testing required for university admissions.
● Ensure administrative compliance procedures for RAS as a testing center (e.g., PSAT).
● Provide students with information and support regarding standardized test preparation and registration.
● Respond to inquiries from non-RAS students regarding test administration.
Data Management & School Records
● Oversee transcript creation, issuance, and maintenance in collaboration with the High School Registrar.
● Track student progress in university counseling, maintaining records of meetings and monitoring milestone completion.
● Analyze university admissions trends and standardized test scores, providing reports to RAS leadership.
● Ensure full oversight of high school diploma requirements, college transcripts, and diploma program credits.
Alumni Engagement
● Collaborate with the Director of Admissions and Communications to strengthen the RAS alumni network.
● Provide university counseling services to alumni for up to two years after graduation.
● Assist in coordinating at least one alumni event per year.
● Develop opportunities for alumni engagement, ensuring current students benefit from alumni experiences and mentorship.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
● Build relationships with college representatives to promote RAS students as competitive university applicants.
● Host university visitors, coordinate student participation in local university fairs, and organize an annual RAS university fair and campus visits when possible.
● Work closely with school leadership, faculty, and staff to ensure academic and university counseling services are accessible, aligned and effective.
● Partner with community stakeholders to provide students with access to college and
career resources.
● Communicate with students, parents, and families in a timely, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
● Host workshops and parent events to inform the community of the college application process at RAS.
● Support the graduation planning team, offering guidance on key elements of the graduation program.
Other Duties as Assigned
● Assist students, families, and the IB DP Coordinator in navigating IB results, including communication with universities and other institutions.
● Perform additional duties as assigned by the Secondary School Principal or Associate Secondary School Principal, these could be serving as an advisor or FLEX teacher (schedule permitting), lunch duties or patio duties, or other tasks.
QUALIFICATION REQUIRED:
* Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
* Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in secondary school or university counseling, with a strong track record of guiding students through international university admissions.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
* Strong advising, communication, and interpersonal skills with students, families, and faculty.
* Solid knowledge of international university admissions systems.
* Excellent writing ability for recommendation letters and counseling communication.
* Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple deadlines and records.
* Proficiency with application platforms and data management.
* Ability to plan and deliver events, workshops, and university visits.
* Cultural competence and commitment to professional growth.
Supervisory Relationship:
The Secondary School University & Career Counselor receives supervision from the Secondary School Principal, and/or his/her designee.
Supervisory Controls:
This position does not include supervision of other RAS staff.
