PURPOSE:
The Elementary School Counselor plays a vital role in fostering students’ social-emotional well-being and supporting their academic and personal growth. Guided by the ISCA and ASCA frameworks, this position encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including classroom-based social-emotional learning (SEL), individual and group counseling, consultation with parents and teachers, parent workshops, child protection leadership, and referrals to external resources. The counselor also contributes to the screening and placement of new students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Student Behavior Support & Incident Response
* Serve as the first line of intervention for student incidents and behavior reports.
* Work with students involved in incidents using restorative practices to address concerns and repair relationships.
* Document incidents and communicate resolutions to relevant staff through the “closing the loop” process. Inform parents about incidents and follow-up actions.
* Work closely with the principal to monitor behavior patterns and school climate. Refer disciplinary consequences to the principal as needed.
Social-Emotional Learning
* Monitor SEL Second Step instruction as implemented by classroom teachers.
* Facilitate whole-class learning experiences, such as Morning Meetings and Closing Circles, to support student well-being.
* Lead small-group counseling sessions on topics such as friendship, restorative practices, transitions, and family changes.
* Support students and families navigating the unique experiences of international school life and transitions.
* Organize and teach the child protection curriculum during October’s Child Protection Month.
* Organize and co-teach 5th-grade health development lessons.
* Responsive Counseling Services
* Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling for students facing social, emotional, or personal challenges.
* Consult with parents, teachers, school leadership, and community professionals to develop strategies that support student success.
* Manage referrals by maintaining an updated list of external resources and connecting families with appropriate services when needed.
* Assist with student transitions, including welcoming new students and supporting those leaving the school.
* Serve as a Child Protection Lead, ensuring the effective implementation of child protection policies and procedures.
Individual Student Support
* Review and support behavior intervention plans.
* Promote inclusion, equity, and access for all students.
* Analyze student data to assess and support SEL goals.
* School-Wide Support
* Uphold ASCA/ISCA ethical and professional standards.
* Serve as a member of the Child Study Team (CST), providing consultation and support.
* Collaborate with the Admissions Office to review applicant files and provide recommendations.
* Offer resources and guidance to teachers, parents, and leadership to enhance student success.
* Organize community workshops on relevant student and school-related topics.
* Support student leadership development through initiatives such as the Assembly Crew.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
* Master’s degree in Education or a related field.
* Certification as a School Counselor.
* Experience working as an Elementary School Counselor, preferably in international and multicultural educational environments.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal collaboration skills.
