Position Summary

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for the administration of all oral medications, eye drops, and suppositories. They administer treatments and other care of residents as necessary. The Medication Aide will not give hypodermic injections, and will not do treatments that require the license of a nurse to administer.

Essential Job Functions

• Set up and administer all medications and treatments ordered by the resident’s provider, in a timely and accurate manner.

• Set up and administer all PRN medications ordered by the provider, and requested by the resident. Chart results, and notify the Charge Nurse if PRN medication ineffective.

• Clean and re-stock medication and treatment carts prior to the end of assigned shift.

• After the administration and charting of all medications, the Medication Aide will assist the Nurse Aide with personal resident care to include bathing and dressing residents, assisting with meal times, observing residents and noting any changes; and assisting with restorative and rehabilitative care.

• Report any medication or treatment errors to Charge Nurse immediately.

• Apply aseptic technique in all resident care to prevent the spread of disease and infection.

• Perform other duties as directed by RN or LPN

• Comply to dress code of facility and follow employee responsibilities as described in the employee manual.

• Demonstrate positive customer service attitude.

Education/Experience

Must have passed the State-mandated Certified Nurse Aide course and test and the State-mandated Certified Medication Aide course and test. Responsible for timely recertification required. Previous experience as a Medication Aide helpful and preferred, but not required. Must have acceptable KBI record check.

Skills

Must be able to read and write, have good reading comprehension, make simple calculations and follow oral and written directions. Must be neat, clean, pleasant in manner, reliable, have ability to work harmoniously with co-workers, be patient and have the desire to help and assist residents in the activities of daily living. Must be trustworthy and detail-oriented, thorough and accurate in administration of medications and treatments.

Reports To

Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing and the Charge Nurse on duty for the shift.

Equipment To Be Used

Medication and treatment carts, Medication Administration and Treatment Records for each resident, keys to each cart and the medication room; cassettes, which include each resident’s medications; and supplies necessary to do ordered treatments for each resident assigned to the Medication Aide. Safety devices including lifts and gait belts, as required by policy, for assisting in lifting and other care of residents.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance, be able to maneuver medication cart (weight 150 to 175#), be able to reach, turn, twist and/or bend as necessary to perform care and treatments of residents, some of whom may be in bed; must be able to be on feet on concrete hallways for at least an 8-hour shift. Must be able to show evidence of knowledge and ability to use recognized channels of communication.

Working Conditions

The employee works in an environment with biological, chemical and mechanical hazards. The employer will provide appropriate training, protective equipment and engineering controls for the protection and safety of the employee. As a condition of the employment the employee is required to abide by all risk management regulations including the proper use of protective devices and procedures.
