Senior Investment Analyst, Project Development

Africa50 has raised over US$1 billion so far from 33 African countries, the African Development Bank, two African Central Banks and Africa’s largest pension fund, Public Investment Corporation. Africa50 has an independent investment process and seeks to generate commercial risk adjusted returns for its investments across key infrastructure sectors: Energy (including power generation and related parts of the value chain), Midstream gas, Transportation, ICT, Health infrastructure, Education and Fintech.

Purpose of the Role

The Investment Analyst role is to support the investment team by providing core financial modelling analysis, research and other required support to enable sound investment decisions.

Principal Responsibilities

Build and maintain complex project finance models including sensitivity analyses, cash flow projections, and scenario modeling

* Analyze capital structures, project financing, and returns under various assumptions
* Conduct industry, market and company research
* Participate in all aspects of Africa50’s project processing cycle from project development to disbursement
* Coordinate due diligence processes across financial, technical, commercial, legal, and ESG workstreams
* Participate in the execution of Africa50’s project development investments with a strong focus on achieving bankable projects
* Support the senior investment team members in negotiations with sponsors, lenders, and public authorities
* Prepare project-related documents for internal and external audiences
* Assist in supervising investments in portfolio companies
* Support the investment team in non-core investment activities (marketing, corporate initiatives, recruitment, etc.)

Candidate Profile

Required Background

* 2 to 5 years prior experience in infrastructure project development and/or project finance within:
* Project finance / infrastructure/tier 1 international investment bank/private equity with exposure to infrastructure sectors
* Project or business development department of a tier 1 power IPP or developer
* An infrastructure department in a development finance institution
* An infrastructure / PPP department of a transaction / financial advisory firm
* An infrastructure private equity fund with exposure to early -to -mid-stage project development

* Bachelor’s degree from a Business or Engineering School. MBA or MSc would be a plus.

* Strong understanding of PPP project structuring and project finance
* Strong business development and client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on clients’ needs effectively and identify potential business partners
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, Fluent in French, Portuguese a plus
* High attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
* Proven experience in financial modelling and valuation, drafting investment memorandum and supporting deal processes
* Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with sponsors, partners and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds; living experience in emerging countries is a plus
* Prior knowledge of African infrastructure and relationships in Africa are a strong plus
